CBDT Member Selection This Month May Shape Board Before December Chairman Succession
This month's Member selection at the CBDT could settle the board's makeup before the December succession to Chairman Ravi Agrawal, whose term ends December 31.
The Member-selection exercise at the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) this month could become important for more than filling one vacancy. It could also decide the composition of the CBDT's leadership ahead of the Chairman's succession in December.
The CBDT is the policy-making body of the Income Tax Department and functions under the Department of Revenue in the Ministry of Finance. It is headed by a Chairman and can have six Members in the rank of Special Secretary. Members hold separate portfolios within the Board.
The December deadline comes from the Chairman's own contract. Ravi Agrawal, a 1988-batch Indian Revenue Service officer, was due to retire on June 30, 2026. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet reappointed him as Chairman on a contract basis for six months from July 1, 2026, or until further orders, in relaxation of the Recruitment Rules. That runs to December 31, 2026.
Agrawal's tenure has been extended before. He became Chairman in June 2024, succeeding Nitin Gupta, for a one-year term. He had served as Member (Administration) in the CBDT from July 2023. In June 2025 the government extended his term by a year, to June 2026, and the latest extension followed. A senior finance ministry officer said the most recent one was meant to ensure continuity in direct tax policy formulation and to let the CBDT take up certain special initiatives.
The selection this month therefore feeds directly into the succession. The Members on the Board in December will be the senior officers in the room when the succession is decided, and the officer chosen now joins them.
The vacancy to be filled is one Member's post. Whoever is chosen joins a Board that is about to change at the top.
Agrawal's current term ends on December 31, 2026.
