V Narayanan Gets Additional Charge of Member Finance, Space Commission
V Narayanan, Chairman of the Space Commission, takes additional charge of the Member Finance post until July 19 during Seema Jain's period of leave.
Dr V Narayanan, Secretary, Department of Space, and Chairman of the Space Commission, has been given additional charge of Member Finance, Space Commission, until July 19, 2026.
The additional charge comes during the period of leave of IAS officer Seema Jain, who normally holds the Member Finance position on the Space Commission, the apex policy-making body overseeing India's space programme, including ISRO's budget allocations and major project approvals. Narayanan, who already heads the Department of Space and chairs the Commission, will temporarily also oversee its financial functions during Jain's absence.
The arrangement is a short-term administrative measure to ensure the Space Commission's financial decision-making continues uninterrupted during Jain's leave period, with the additional charge reverting once she returns to her regular post after July 19.
The Space Commission approves major project sanctions, budget allocations and organisational decisions for the Department of Space, including ISRO's launch programmes and satellite missions, making the Member Finance role central to clearing high-value expenditure proposals. Narayanan holding the finance charge alongside his existing responsibilities as Secretary and Commission Chairman concentrates both policy and financial sign-off authority in a single officer for the eleven-day period, an arrangement typically limited to short leave periods rather than extended vacancies.
