Akhilesh Kumar Singh Promoted Joint Director at CBI, Replacing Sudha Singh

Akhilesh Kumar Singh, an IPS officer of the 2008-batch Maharashtra cadre currently serving as Deputy Inspector General at the Central Bureau of Investigation, has been elevated to Joint Director in the agency. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the appointment on August 10, with Singh taking over from Sudha Singh, IPS of the 2006-batch Odisha cadre, and holding the post until July 22, 2028, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

The Joint Director rank sits directly below the CBI's Directorate leadership and above the Deputy Inspector General level, giving the officer supervisory charge over multiple investigation zones handling corruption cases, bank frauds, economic offences and cases of organised and special crime that fall within the agency's jurisdiction. Joint Directors coordinate across zonal offices, sign off on investigation strategy in sensitive cases, and represent the agency in inter-agency coordination with the Enforcement Directorate and state police forces.

Singh joined the IPS in the 2008 batch after being allotted the Maharashtra cadre, where he built an early career that included a stint commanding a State Reserve Police Force group before his elevation to the DIG rank in the state in 2021. He moved to the CBI on central deputation the same year, joining the agency's Anti-Corruption Branch in Delhi as Deputy Inspector General, a posting extended earlier this year for a further two years, taking his total tenure in the agency to seven years.

As DIG, Singh supervised multiple investigation teams within the CBI's anti-corruption wing, overseeing cases that ranged from departmental corruption inquiries to complex financial fraud investigations requiring coordination with banking regulators. His extension in the DIG post earlier this year, running from July 2026 to July 2028, has now been superseded by this promotion to the Joint Director rank, a progression that keeps him within the agency but with substantially wider supervisory responsibility.

The appointment is one of three Joint Director-level postings cleared in the same order, alongside Satya Veer Singh and Anish Gupta, all of whom belong to the 2008 IPS batch and were serving as DIGs within the CBI before their elevation. The near-simultaneous promotion of three officers from the same batch reflects a broader restructuring of the agency's middle and senior leadership as several serving Joint Directors approach the end of their tenures or superannuation.

Singh's elevation comes at a time when the CBI is handling an expanding caseload of economic offences referred by state governments and central regulators, and the agency's leadership has repeatedly flagged the need for experienced supervisory officers to manage the volume without compromising the pace of individual investigations. His seven years of continuous exposure to the CBI's anti-corruption functioning position him to take on the Joint Director's coordination role without a learning curve, an advantage the agency has weighed heavily given the sensitivity of ongoing cases his zone will inherit from his predecessor.

The three simultaneous promotions from the 2008 batch also mark a generational shift within the CBI's Joint Director cadre, replacing officers from the 2006 batch who had held these posts for extended terms. Such batch-level transitions typically bring changes in how zones are organised and in the working relationships between the CBI's leadership and state police forces on joint investigations, adjustments that will play out over the coming months as Singh and his fellow appointees settle into their expanded charges.

The order, numbered 6/28/2026-EO(SM-I), references a DoPT note dated July 23, 2026, and was issued by Director Annies Kanmani Joy, with copies to the Prime Minister's Office, the Cabinet Secretariat and Joint Secretary Sushil Kumar Patel of the DoPT.
