Amit Kumar Appointed OSD, Special Protection Group
Amit Kumar, Special DG of CRPF, has been appointed OSD in the Special Protection Group, succeeding Alok Sharma whose tenure ends in March 2027.
Amit Kumar, presently Special Director General of CRPF, has been appointed Officer on Special Duty in the Special Protection Group, on completion of the tenure of IPS officer Alok Sharma on March 31, 2027. He is a 1994-batch IPS officer of the Bihar cadre.
The Special Protection Group provides close protection to the Prime Minister and designated former prime ministers, and its officer strength is drawn from multiple central police organisations on rotation, a structure intended to bring varied operational experience into the force's protective security planning.
Kumar currently holds the rank of Special Director General at CRPF, India's largest central armed police force, where he has overseen operations as part of the force's senior leadership before this move to SPG.
His appointment as OSD is structured to take effect upon Alok Sharma's completion of tenure at SPG in March 2027, meaning Kumar's transition into the role will follow a planned handover rather than an immediate change of charge.
Kumar has separately received the Kendriya Grihmantri Dakshata Padak for Special Operations, a Union Home Ministry award recognising performance in specialised operational roles, according to a post by the Department of Personnel and Training.
As OSD designate at SPG, Kumar's move reflects the practice of identifying senior officers for protective security roles well ahead of an actual vacancy, given the sensitivity and continuity required in VIP protection assignments.
The appointment takes effect on completion of Alok Sharma's tenure on March 31, 2027, as per the order.
