CBDT Chairman Ravi Agrawal Gets Six-Month Extension
CBDT Chairman Ravi Agrawal has been re-appointed on a contract basis for six more months. He is a 1988-batch IRS officer of the Income Tax cadre.
CBDT Chairman Ravi Agrawal has been re-appointed Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes on contract basis for six more months. He is a 1988-batch officer of the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax).
The CBDT Chairman heads the apex body responsible for administering direct tax laws in India, overseeing income tax assessment policy, the income tax department's field formations, and the board's coordination with the Finance Ministry on tax revenue targets.
Agrawal's extension keeps him in the role for a further six months on contract, a common arrangement used to retain a sitting chairman beyond superannuation when continuity at the top of the tax administration is considered a priority.
The CBDT has in recent years expanded its use of data analytics to flag high-risk cases for scrutiny, reducing the proportion of routine assessments that require direct taxpayer interaction with field officers — a shift in approach that has continued through Agrawal's tenure.
His continuation comes at a point in the financial year when the income tax department's annual collection targets and ongoing faceless assessment scheme are both under active monitoring by the Finance Ministry.
As Chairman, Agrawal will continue to oversee the CBDT's coordination with the Finance Ministry on both routine tax administration and any policy changes that emerge ahead of the next Union Budget.
The extension is for six months on a contract basis, as per the order.
