Kumar Shanker Takes Charge as Managing Director of Indraprastha Gas Limited
Kumar Shanker has assumed charge as the new Managing Director of Indraprastha Gas Limited, bringing fresh leadership to Delhi's major city gas distribution network. The appointment marks a new chapter for IGL as it continues expanding its CNG and PNG network across the Delhi NCR region.
Kumar Shanker has formally assumed charge as the new Managing Director of Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), bringing fresh leadership to one of the capital's most operationally critical public sector enterprises. IGL is the primary city gas distribution company serving Delhi and parts of the National Capital Region, supplying compressed natural gas (CNG) to hundreds of thousands of vehicles and piped natural gas (PNG) to domestic and commercial consumers across its service territory. The company's operations are central to Delhi's clean energy and air quality agenda, given the role of CNG as a cleaner alternative to conventional vehicular fuels. Shanker's assumption of charge marks a new chapter for IGL at a time when the company is actively expanding its distribution network to newer areas in the NCR, increasing its PNG connections, and exploring opportunities in emerging clean energy segments. The Managing Director's role requires balancing operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, infrastructure investment, and stakeholder management across a complex urban and peri-urban distribution landscape. The previous governance arrangements at IGL had seen the company managed through interim leadership arrangements pending this formal appointment. Kumar Shanker's arrival is expected to provide the organisational stability and strategic direction needed to accelerate IGL's growth plans over the coming years. Industry analysts tracking the city gas distribution sector note that IGL's performance under its new leadership will be closely watched, particularly as the company navigates evolving gas pricing dynamics, increasing competition from renewable energy alternatives, and the policy environment around urban clean mobility.
