Lt Gen Abhijit Pendharkar Set to Take Over as Director General of Military Operations
Lt Gen Abhijit Pendharkar is likely to be appointed as the next DGMO of the Indian Army.
Lt Gen Abhijit S Pendharkar, currently serving as General Officer Commanding of Spear Corps in Dimapur, is set to take over as Director General of Military Operations, one of the Indian Army's most operationally significant staff appointments.
The DGMO position sits at the centre of the Army's operational planning and coordination function, overseeing border management strategy, operational readiness assessments, and coordination with other services and agencies on matters of national security along India's land borders.
Pendharkar's current command of Spear Corps, based in Dimapur and responsible for security operations across India's northeastern border region, has given him direct operational experience relevant to the DGMO role, particularly around counter-insurgency operations and border management in a strategically sensitive sector of the country.
The DGMO traditionally also serves as one of the Army's key interlocutors during periods of heightened border tension, including participating in flag meetings and operational coordination with neighbouring countries' militaries when required, making the appointment one that carries both operational and diplomatic dimensions.
His appointment comes at a time when the Indian Army has continued to emphasise strengthening border infrastructure and operational preparedness across multiple sensitive sectors, a priority the incoming DGMO will be expected to help coordinate at the strategic planning level.
General Officer Commanding postings at corps level, such as Pendharkar's current Spear Corps command, are typically held by officers being groomed for senior Army headquarters staff appointments, with the DGMO role representing one of the more prominent such transitions from field command to strategic headquarters responsibility.
