Pankaj Mishra Emerges as Top Contender for CBDT Chairmanship
Pankaj Mishra, 1989-batch IRS-IT officer, is emerging as frontrunner for CBDT Chairman post if Ravi Agrawal moves to another assignment.
As the tenure of incumbent Chairman Ravi Agrawal of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) draws to a close following an extension through June 2026, attention has turned to who will helm the country's apex direct tax body next. Senior Indian Revenue Service officer Pankaj Mishra, a 1989-batch IRS (Income Tax) officer, is being considered as a frontrunner for the top position should Agrawal move to a different assignment. Mishra's candidacy is particularly noteworthy given the timing — he is set to retire in October 2026. An appointment to the CBDT chairmanship would likely be accompanied by a one-year extension in service, enabling him to steer the organisation through a critical period of tax administration reform and digitisation. The CBDT, functioning under the Ministry of Finance's Department of Revenue, is responsible for administering direct tax laws and implementing income tax policy across India. The role of its Chairman carries considerable administrative and policy significance. Ravi Agrawal, the current Chairman, has already received one extension and his future assignment remains a subject of speculation within bureaucratic circles. If he transitions to another role in the government, the path clears for Mishra's elevation to the top post. Officials familiar with the matter indicate that the final decision will hinge on the government's assessment of Agrawal's next posting. Meanwhile, Mishra's experience across IRS cadre positions and his standing within the tax administration hierarchy make him a credible choice for the post. The appointment, once formalised, will be closely watched by the direct tax community and the broader business sector alike.
