Race for SAIL's Top Job: PESB Shortlists 10 Candidates Ahead of March 28 CMD Interviews

As the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) braces for a critical leadership transition, the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) has officially shortlisted 10 candidates for the prestigious role of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD). The high-stakes interviews are scheduled to take place on March 28.

Currently, the spotlight is firmly fixed on the Ministry of Steel. With incumbent CMD Amarendu Prakash scheduled to demit office after April 1, the ministry has yet to finalize its decision regarding an interim CMD to steer the Maharatna company during the transition period.

The 10 Shortlisted Contenders

The PESB’s shortlist features a strategic mix of seasoned executives drawn directly from SAIL, alongside high-ranking officials from other public sector undertakings (PSUs) and government services. The candidates appearing for the interview include:

1.      Manish Raj Gupta – Director (Mining), SAIL & CMD, Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (Additional Charge)

2.      Alok Verma – Director In-Charge (Rourkela Steel Plant) with additional charge of Director (Commercial), SAIL

3.      Dr. Ashok Kumar Panda – Director (Finance) with additional charge of Director (Commercial), SAIL

4.      Bipin Kumar Giri – Executive Director (Mines Development), SAIL

5.      Munna Prasad Singh – Executive Director (Mines), OGOM, CLMO, Rourkela Steel Plant

6.      Anish Sengupta – Executive Director (Projects), SAIL

7.      Krishna Gopal Agarwal – Director (Finance), RITES Limited

8.      Anup Kumar Satpathy – Chief Safety Officer, South East Central Railways

9.      Dr. Pudi Hariprasad – Chief Administrative Officer (Treasury & Reconciliation), Railways

10.  Chetan Prakash Jain – Additional Secretary & Financial Advisor and CMD, Central Electronics Limited

According to key industry insiders, the battle for the corner office is primarily being fought among candidates already embedded within SAIL. The prevailing sentiment is that internal executives hold a distinct advantage due to their specialized domain expertise and deep operational experience within the highly complex steel sector. Consequently, candidates hailing from outside organizations or different sectors are currently viewed as having limited chances of securing the appointment in this particular selection process.
