Shailesh Vagerwal Selected as Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Bharat Dynamics Limited
Shailesh Vagerwal, current CGM at Munitions India Limited, has been selected as the new CMD of Bharat Dynamics Limited following a PESB meeting.
Shailesh Vagerwal has been selected for the position of Chairman-cum-Managing Director at Bharat Dynamics Limited, following a Public Enterprises Selection Board meeting held on February 21, 2026, where he emerged as the successful candidate from among nine individuals interviewed for the post.
Bharat Dynamics Limited is a central public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Defence, specialising in the manufacture of guided missiles and defence electronics, making the CMD position one with direct relevance to India's strategic defence production capacity rather than a purely commercial manufacturing role.
Vagerwal currently holds the position of Chief General Manager at Munitions India Limited, another defence sector public enterprise, meaning his selection represents a lateral move from a senior executive role at one defence public sector undertaking to the top leadership position at another, a pattern PESB has periodically followed for CMD-level appointments within the defence manufacturing sector.
The nine-candidate interview pool for this vacancy reflects the competitive nature of CMD-level appointments within India's defence public sector enterprises, with PESB typically drawing candidates from senior executives across multiple defence and defence-adjacent public sector companies rather than restricting the search to internal candidates at BDL alone.
Bharat Dynamics has continued to play a central role in India's push for indigenous defence manufacturing capacity, particularly around guided missile systems, an area of sustained government emphasis given the strategic importance of reducing reliance on imported defence technology for critical weapons systems.
Following PESB's recommendation, the appointment proceeds through the standard clearance process involving the Ministry of Defence and the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet before formal notification and Vagerwal's assumption of charge.
The selection was processed through the Public Enterprises Selection Board's standard procedure for board-level appointments at central public sector enterprises under the Ministry of Defence.
