MP Government Sends IPS Officer Siddarth Bahuguna to CBI on Deputation

The Madhya Pradesh government has entrusted the services of Siddarth Bahuguna, a 2010-batch IPS officer of the state cadre, to the Central Bureau of Investigation on deputation for the next five years, according to an order issued Monday. Bahuguna, who was serving as Deputy Inspector General of Police, Khargone Range, has been appointed DIG at CBI.

The CBI regularly draws officers from state cadres on deputation to staff its investigative teams, particularly for cases requiring officers with state-level policing experience in addition to central investigative training. A five-year deputation term is a standard tenure for such central postings, allowing the officer to complete a full assignment cycle before repatriation to the home cadre.

Bahuguna's move out of Khargone Range creates a vacancy in one of Madhya Pradesh's police administrative divisions, which the state government will need to fill separately. His shift to CBI reflects the routine but consequential churn in state-to-Centre deputations that shapes both state police leadership and the investigative agency's staffing.

The CBI's DIG-rank officers typically head or co-head specific investigative divisions within the agency, covering areas such as economic offences, anti-corruption cases and special crimes referred by state governments or courts. State cadre officers deputed to such postings bring field-level policing experience that complements the CBI's central investigative apparatus, and the five-year term gives the agency continuity in a role that would otherwise see frequent turnover if tenures were shorter.

The Madhya Pradesh government's order formalises the deputation for a five-year period, allowing Bahuguna to complete his new CBI posting without interruption from the state cadre.
