Amarendu Prakash's Tenure as SAIL Chairman-cum-Managing Director Curtailed, PESB Seeks Applications for Successor
The tenure of Amarendu Prakash as Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Steel Authority of India Limited has been curtailed, with the Public Enterprises Selection Board inviting applications for a new candidate ahead of a March 9, 2026 deadline.
SAIL is among India's largest steel producers and a significant central public sector enterprise, making the CMD position one of the more consequential leadership roles within the country's public sector industrial landscape, given the company's scale of operations across multiple integrated steel plants nationwide.
A curtailed tenure, ending before an officer's originally sanctioned term, is distinct from a routine retirement or completion of tenure, and typically prompts closer attention within public sector enterprise circles regarding the specific circumstances behind the early conclusion of the appointment, though such orders do not always detail the underlying reason.
PESB's decision to advertise the vacancy and seek fresh applications, rather than promoting an existing internal candidate without competition, follows the board's standard practice for CMD-level vacancies at major public sector enterprises, opening the selection process to eligible candidates from within SAIL as well as from other public sector steel and industrial enterprises.
SAIL has continued to operate within a challenging environment shaped by global steel price volatility, domestic demand fluctuations, and the capital-intensive nature of maintaining and upgrading integrated steel plant infrastructure, making leadership continuity and strategic direction particularly significant during any transition period.
The incoming CMD will inherit responsibility for SAIL's ongoing modernisation and capacity expansion plans across its plant network, alongside the company's financial performance amid the broader steel sector's cyclical price and demand pressures.
The selection process is being coordinated through the Ministry of Steel, with the final appointment subject to clearance from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet once PESB completes its evaluation of applicants.
