Uttar Pradesh Set to Get Permanent Police Chief After Four-Year Hiatus

Uttar Pradesh is poised to end a prolonged administrative vacuum at the top of its police hierarchy, with the Union Public Service Commission convening its Emergency Committee Meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday to finalise the panel for the state's next Director General of Police. The state has been without a permanent DGP for close to four years — an unusually extended gap that has drawn attention from governance observers and courts alike. The UPSC's committee meeting marks a decisive step towards regularising the top police command in the country's most populous state. Senior IPS officer Rajeev Krishna is understood to be the leading contender for the post, based on seniority and service record, according to sources tracking the appointment process. The UPSC will prepare a panel of eligible candidates, from which the state government will make its final selection. The appointment is expected to bring greater institutional stability to the Uttar Pradesh Police and provide clearer command authority at a time when the state faces ongoing challenges related to law and order, organised crime, and preparations for upcoming elections. Governance experts say a permanent DGP will also strengthen the chain of accountability within the 250,000-strong state police force.
