Tripathi's outgoing post at Khurda Road division of East Coast Railway has since been filled by D Sunil, an officer of the Indian Railway Service of Signal Engineers transferred from Southern Railway, continuing the division's operational leadership without an extended vacancy between the two officers' tenures.
The five-year term specified for Tripathi's Joint Secretary posting is longer than the typical three-to-four-year central deputation tenure many central staffing scheme appointments carry, suggesting either an extended assignment tied to specific ongoing initiatives within the ministry's petroleum and natural gas policy portfolio or a standard tenure length the ministry applies to this specific position.
With Tripathi now formally in position, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas is expected to finalise his specific portfolio allocation among the ministry's various policy verticals, a step that typically follows shortly after an officer's formal charge-taking date once administrative onboarding is complete.

The Divisional Railway Manager position Tripathi held at Khurda Road carries direct operational charge of a railway division, encompassing train operations, infrastructure maintenance, and coordination with the parent zonal railway on matters spanning safety, punctuality, and revenue targets within the division's jurisdiction, making it one of the more hands-on field postings within the Indian Railway Traffic Service before an officer moves to a central secretariat role. East Coast Railway, the zone under which Khurda Road division falls, is among the network's revenue-significant zones given its freight traffic corridors serving the mineral and industrial belt of Odisha.
