Brij Mohan Mishra Appointed Minister (Economic and Commercial) at Indian Embassy, Tokyo

Brij Mohan Mishra, an IAS officer of the AGMUT cadre from the 2008 batch, has been appointed Minister (Economic and Commercial) at the Embassy of India, Tokyo, on deputation under the Department of Economic Affairs, for a period of three years. He currently serves as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

The post is a Joint Secretary-level foreign assignment overseeing India's economic and commercial relationship with Japan, one of the country's largest sources of foreign direct investment and a key partner in infrastructure financing, including the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project. The Minister (Economic and Commercial) coordinates on trade promotion, investment facilitation, and the bilateral economic dialogue mechanisms that run alongside the broader India-Japan strategic partnership, including annual summit-level meetings between the two countries' leaders.

Mishra brings direct commerce ministry experience to the post, having worked most recently within the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on trade-related matters, a background that aligns closely with the commercial dimension of the Tokyo posting. His AGMUT cadre service has spanned administrative postings across the Delhi region and at the Centre over roughly a decade and a half, giving him exposure to both grassroots civic administration and central policy work before this diplomatic assignment.

At the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, he held Joint Secretary-level responsibilities on trade policy matters prior to this appointment, a role that involved engagement with Japan and other trade partners on market access and investment facilitation issues.

He succeeds Ms Debjani Chakrabarti, who completed her approved tenure at the post on April 28, 2027. The rotation maintains continuity in a bilateral relationship that has seen expanding Japanese investment commitments to India across manufacturing, semiconductors, and infrastructure in recent years, with Japanese companies increasingly viewing India as an alternative manufacturing base amid broader supply-chain diversification.

Mishra will need to manage India's economic engagement with Japan at a time when both countries are working to deepen supply-chain cooperation in semiconductors and critical minerals, alongside the long-running bullet train project, which has faced periodic delays on land acquisition and funding disbursement even as construction has progressed on several sections of the corridor.

The posting runs for three years under the Department of Economic Affairs, effective on completion of Chakrabarti's tenure.
