CBIC Accepts Voluntary Retirement of Two IRS Officers

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has accepted the voluntary retirement applications of two officers of the Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Indirect Taxes): Deputy Commissioner Shairaj M. and Assistant Commissioner R. Manjunatha.

Voluntary retirement under central service rules allows an officer to exit before superannuation after completing a minimum qualifying period of service, and acceptances by the cadre-controlling authority, in this case the CBIC, are formal orders that close out the officer's service record.

Shairaj M. held the rank of Deputy Commissioner, a field-level supervisory post within the customs and GST administration responsible for assessment, audit and enforcement functions within a jurisdiction, while R. Manjunatha served as Assistant Commissioner, an entry-to-mid-level gazetted rank in the same cadre.

Their exits reduce the working strength of the IRS (C&IT) cadre at a time when the department is already managing vacancies across multiple ranks amid rising workloads tied to GST administration and customs enforcement.

Voluntary retirements at these ranks are not unusual in the IRS cadre and are typically driven by individual career considerations rather than any departmental policy push, though each exit adds marginally to the promotion pipeline for officers below them.

The CBIC will need to backfill both posts through its regular promotion or transfer cycle to keep field formations at sanctioned strength.

Both retirements take effect from the date specified in the CBIC's acceptance order.
