IFS Officer Lakshmanan Ramesh Babu Appointed India's Ambassador to Côte d'Ivoire
IFS officer Lakshmanan Ramesh Babu, currently Consul General in Atlanta, appointed as India's next Ambassador to Côte d'Ivoire.
Lakshmanan Ramesh Babu, a 2005-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer presently serving as Consul General of India in Atlanta, United States, has been appointed as India's next Ambassador to the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire. The appointment signals a transition from a North American consular posting to a substantive diplomatic mission in West Africa. Côte d'Ivoire, also known as Ivory Coast, is one of West Africa's most economically dynamic nations and a significant partner for India in the region. The country is the world's largest producer of cocoa and a notable exporter of other agricultural commodities, and it plays a central role in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). India's bilateral relationship with Côte d'Ivoire encompasses trade, investment, development cooperation, and a substantial Indian diaspora presence in the country. As Ambassador, Ramesh Babu will be the senior-most representative of the Indian government in Abidjan, responsible for advancing bilateral ties, promoting Indian commercial interests, and engaging with the Ivorian government on diplomatic, developmental, and multilateral issues. India has been deepening its engagement with Africa through the India-Africa Forum Summit (IAFS) framework and various development partnership initiatives. Ramesh Babu's experience at the Consulate General in Atlanta — one of India's busiest consular missions given the large Indian-American community and the economic significance of the South-Eastern United States — would have sharpened his skills in high-volume diplomatic and consular management. His appointment to Côte d'Ivoire comes at a time of growing Indian strategic interest in Francophone West Africa.
