Ravi Shankar has been appointed as the new Executive Director of the Reserve Bank of India, with effect from July 1, 2026.
Executive Directors sit just below the Deputy Governors in the RBI's management structure, each typically heading one or more of the central bank's departments, from banking regulation to monetary policy operations, foreign exchange management or currency issue.
The RBI draws its Executive Directors from career central bankers who have risen through its own cadre over decades, giving each appointee deep familiarity with the specific departments they are assigned to oversee.
Shankar's appointment adds to the RBI's executive bench at a time when the central bank is managing a range of priorities, including inflation targeting, digital currency pilots and regulatory oversight of a rapidly consolidating banking and non-banking financial sector.
The specific departmental portfolio assigned to Shankar will determine which part of the RBI's operations falls under his direct charge.
Executive Director appointments at the RBI are made by the central bank's own board and management, distinct from government-appointed posts such as Deputy Governor.
The appointment takes effect from July 1, 2026.
