Shyam Jagannathan Gets Two-Year Extension on Central Deputation in Shipping Ministry

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved a two-year extension of the central deputation tenure of Shyam Jagannathan, who serves as Director General in the rank of Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. His extended tenure now runs from June 1, 2026 through June 1, 2028. Jagannathan's continued presence at the Shipping Ministry comes at a time when India is pushing ahead with a wide-ranging programme to develop port infrastructure, improve coastal shipping connectivity, and increase the share of water transport in the country's logistics mix. The Sagarmala project and related port-led development initiatives require sustained institutional leadership, which the extension is likely intended to support. Tenure extensions at the DG level are approved when the work at hand is considered too important to disrupt through a personnel change, or when a suitable replacement cannot be identified immediately. In Jagannathan's case, the two-year extension through to mid-2028 gives the ministry a clear horizon of leadership continuity. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has been one of the more active economic ministries in recent years, with several major port expansion projects, the development of new waterways, and the push for green shipping gaining momentum.
