What Went Wrong for Satish Golcha in the Last Three Months?

Satish Golcha, the 1992-batch AGMUT cadre IPS officer who took over as Delhi Police Commissioner in August 2025, has been abruptly replaced, directed to report to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi even though his tenure was formally slated to run until April 2027.

The Delhi Police Commissioner's post is among the most politically sensitive postings in Indian policing, given the force's direct oversight by the Ministry of Home Affairs rather than the Delhi government, and its responsibility for security in the national capital, including VVIP protection and law and order during high-profile political events.

Golcha took charge in August 2025 in the immediate aftermath of an attack on Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta at her camp office, and had built a reputation over his career, including as Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) during the 2020 northeast Delhi riots, as a hard taskmaster known for administrative discipline.

He came into the top post from Director General (Prisons), Delhi, where he had overseen Tihar Jail, Mandoli and Rohini, having earlier managed rising jail violence in an interim capacity before that posting was made regular, and had also served as DGP of Arunachal Pradesh.

His removal follows what sources describe as an unexplained turn over the past three months: as recently as May, Golcha's name was reportedly in contention for CBI Director, with speculation dividing between him and incumbent Praveen Sood continuing in the post. Instead, he has now been eased out of Delhi Police altogether, succeeded by Anurag Kumar, a 1994-batch AGMUT cadre officer repatriated from the Intelligence Bureau.

Golcha's exit, coming with roughly a year and a half still left on his stated tenure, leaves open questions about what shifted between his consideration for one of the country's top investigative posts in May and his removal from Delhi Police barely weeks later, with no official reason cited in the order directing him to report to the L-G.

Anurag Kumar has since assumed charge as Delhi's 27th Police Commissioner, with the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet having approved his repatriation from the IB just a day before the order was issued.
