10 UP-Cadre IPS Officers Set to Retire This Month; State Bracing for Fresh Reshuffle

Ten IPS officers of the Uttar Pradesh cadre are scheduled to superannuate this month, spanning ranks from Director General down to Superintendent of Police, according to officials tracking the state's police postings.

Uttar Pradesh runs the largest police force of any Indian state, with a sanctioned strength running into several lakh personnel across zones, ranges and districts. A simultaneous exit of ten officers across that many rank levels creates vacancies at both the policy-making tier in Lucknow and at the operational SP level in districts, which the state's Home Department has to fill through its next transfer order.

The officers due to retire span the full seniority ladder of the force, from the DG rank that heads zones and specialised wings, down to SPs who run district-level law and order. No individual names were listed in the current order.

This is not the state's first such round this year; UP's police leadership has seen multiple reshuffles through 2026 as the government has moved officers across ranges and specialised postings.

State officials indicated that the retirements are expected to trigger another significant reshuffle of IPS officers in Uttar Pradesh, as the government moves to fill the vacated DG, ADG, IG and SP-rank positions.

Any reshuffle of this scale typically also opens up promotion vacancies for officers next in line for empanelment at each rank, since state cadres fill senior posts largely through internal elevation rather than lateral entry.

The retirements are due this month; the anticipated transfer list has not yet been issued.
