Amit Garg Moves From SVPNPA to Head NCRB as Director

Amit Garg, a 1993-batch IPS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, has been appointed Director of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), moving from his current posting as Director of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA). His tenure runs until October 31, 2027, his date of superannuation.

The appointment involved a temporary upgradation of the Director, NCRB post to the rank of Director General to accommodate Garg's seniority, according to the order. NCRB functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs and is the custodian of national crime data, including fingerprint records and the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) that links police stations across states for real-time data sharing.

Garg's move follows a stint at SVPNPA, the country's premier training institution for IPS probationers located in Hyderabad, where he was responsible for shaping the foundational training curriculum for incoming police officers. His shift to NCRB places him at the centre of India's crime data infrastructure at a time when the bureau has been expanding its remit to cover cybercrime statistics and digital evidence standards alongside traditional crime records.

The temporary upgradation of the NCRB Director post to DG rank reflects the seniority Garg carries as a 1993-batch officer, and signals the importance the Home Ministry is placing on the bureau's leadership as states transition to new criminal law codes requiring updated data classification systems.

NCRB's core responsibilities include compiling the annual Crime in India report, maintaining the national fingerprint database, and running CCTNS, which links roughly 17,000 police stations across the country to a shared crime and criminal records system. The bureau has in recent years also taken on responsibility for coordinating standardised formats for cybercrime reporting, an area that has grown rapidly alongside the expansion of online fraud and digital financial crime cases reported by states.

The order confirms Garg's tenure at NCRB will run until his superannuation date of October 31, 2027, giving him a defined runway of just over a year in the post.
