Ashutosh Pant Appointed General Manager, Banaras Locomotive Works
Ashutosh Pant appointed GM of Banaras Locomotive Works.
Ashutosh Pant has been appointed General Manager of Banaras Locomotive Works, moving from his previous position as Principal Chief Electrical Engineer at Northern Railway.
Banaras Locomotive Works, one of Indian Railways' key production units, manufactures diesel and electric locomotives for the network, making the General Manager's role central to overseeing production targets, quality control, and workforce management at a facility that directly feeds the railways' locomotive fleet expansion and replacement needs.
Pant is an officer of the Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers, the cadre responsible for electrical systems across Indian Railways' operations, spanning traction, signalling-adjacent electrical infrastructure, and rolling stock electrical systems, a technical background directly relevant to a production unit manufacturing electric as well as diesel locomotives.
His previous position as Principal Chief Electrical Engineer at Northern Railway placed him in charge of electrical engineering oversight across one of the network's largest and busiest zones, a role that would have involved managing traction infrastructure, electrical maintenance operations, and coordination with the zone's operations and safety functions on a day-to-day basis.
General Manager postings at production units such as Banaras Locomotive Works are typically filled by senior officers with strong technical backgrounds in the relevant engineering discipline, given that the role combines engineering oversight with broader administrative responsibility for the unit's output, procurement, and workforce, a pairing that officers moving from senior zonal technical postings are generally considered well suited for.
Indian Railways has continued to prioritise locomotive manufacturing capacity as part of its broader network modernisation and electrification push, placing sustained emphasis on production efficiency and technical quality at units including Banaras Locomotive Works.
The appointment was processed through the Railway Board's standard process for General Manager-level postings at production units.
Locomotive production units such as Banaras Locomotive Works operate on annual output targets set in coordination with the Railway Board, tying the General Manager's performance closely to the unit's ability to meet manufacturing schedules for both new locomotive orders and mid-life upgrades to existing rolling stock. Officers appointed to lead production units of this kind are typically expected to balance production-floor engineering oversight with broader administrative duties spanning procurement of components, coordination with railway zones on delivery schedules, and workforce management across a unit employing a substantial technical and industrial workforce.
Pant's appointment takes effect with immediate charge of the production unit, and the transition follows the standard handover process the Railway Board applies to General Manager-level changes at its production units nationwide. The unit's workforce, spanning both technical and administrative staff, will report to Pant as he takes charge of production planning and coordination with the Railway Board on delivery schedules for the current financial year. His immediate priorities are expected to include reviewing pending production targets and ongoing component procurement timelines inherited from the previous General Manager's tenure.
