Avinash Kumar Mishra Gets Additional Charge of ED/Military Rail, Railway Board

Avinash Kumar Mishra, presently serving as Executive Director, Traffic Transportation (Freight) at the Railway Board, has been entrusted with the additional charge of Executive Director/Military Rail during the leave of Sharad Srivastava, from July 21 to July 31, 2026. Mishra is an officer of the Indian Railway Traffic Service.

The ED/Military Rail post at the Railway Board coordinates the movement of defence personnel, equipment and supplies over the rail network, working closely with the armed forces on troop trains and strategic freight movement, a function distinct from but closely linked to commercial freight operations.

Mishra's substantive charge as ED, Traffic Transportation (Freight) puts him at the centre of the Railway Board's freight-loading targets, a portfolio that has grown in importance as Indian Railways pushes to raise its share of bulk goods movement away from road transport.

His additional charge is a short-duration arrangement necessitated purely by Srivastava's ten-day leave, and does not represent a change to Mishra's substantive posting at the Board.

Such additional-charge arrangements are routine at the Railway Board when a director-level officer proceeds on leave, with the Board typically assigning charge to an officer already handling a related traffic or operations portfolio rather than leaving the post unattended.

During this period, Mishra will be responsible for military rail movement matters alongside his existing freight transportation duties, a dual load that Board-level officers periodically take on during short leave vacancies.

The additional charge arrangement runs from July 21 to July 31, 2026, after which Sharad Srivastava is expected to resume the ED/Military Rail post.
