New GOI guidelines make two-year central deputation at SP/DIG level mandatory for IPS officers seeking empanelment as Inspector General.

The Government of India has introduced strict criteria for the empanelment of IPS officers to the rank of Inspector General (IG). Officers from the 2011 batch onwards must complete a mandatory minimum tenure of two years at the SP/DIG level or equivalent within the central government to be eligible for IG or equivalent posts.
