Gyanender Singh Malik Takes Charge as Gujarat's New Director General of Police

Gujarat has a new police chief. Gyanender Singh Malik (IPS: 1993: GJ), who was serving as the Police Commissioner of Ahmedabad city, has been elevated to the post of Director General of Police (DGP) of the state of Gujarat. Malik steps into the role vacated by Dr K L N Rao (IPS: 1991: GJ), who had been serving as DGP in an additional capacity. The selection process saw three senior IPS officers of the Gujarat cadre in contention — Rao, Malik, and Neerja Gotru (IPS: 1993: GJ), who currently heads the state's Police Recruitment Board. The appointment signals a reshaping of Gujarat's top police leadership, with Malik's extensive field experience in Ahmedabad — India's fifth largest city — considered a key factor in his selection. The formal orders have been issued by the state government.
