IAS officers Ajit Kumar and Aditya Verma transfer cadres to Odisha and Andhra Pradesh respectively .
The central government has approved inter-cadre transfers for two 2022-batch IAS officers on marriage grounds, with Ajit Kumar moving from Nagaland to Odisha and Aditya Verma transferring from Assam-Meghalaya to Andhra Pradesh.
Kumar's transfer to Odisha allows him to join his spouse, Medha Sinha, an Indian Forest Service officer, while Verma's move to Andhra Pradesh brings him into the same cadre as his spouse, IAS officer Tirumani Sri Pooja, both transfers processed under the standard marriage-ground provision within the All India Services (Cadre) Rules.
Inter-cadre transfers on marriage grounds allow officers married to each other but allocated to different state cadres to apply for one spouse's transfer to the other's cadre, intended to allow married officer couples to serve within reasonable proximity of one another rather than being posted indefinitely in separate states.
Such transfers require approval from both the losing and gaining cadre's state governments in addition to central clearance from the Department of Personnel and Training, a multi-step approval process that can take considerable time depending on vacancy availability in the gaining cadre.
As 2022-batch officers, both Kumar and Verma's transfers come early in their careers, before they would have accumulated significant postings within their original cadre allocations, a timing that typically simplifies the administrative transition compared to a transfer requested later in an officer's career.
The transfers reflect the practical challenge many dual-officer couples face when allocated to different state cadres through the standard cadre allocation process following the civil services examination, a provision the marriage-ground transfer rule is specifically designed to address.
Both transfer orders were processed jointly by the respective losing and gaining cadre authorities in coordination with the Department of Personnel and Training.
