2017-Batch IRS Officer Kumthe Sumit Baban Posted as NCB Assistant Director in Mumbai
2017-batch IRS officer Kumthe Sumit Baban is posted as Assistant Director at the NCB South-Western Wing in Mumbai to strengthen maritime drug enforcement.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has finalized the posting of Kumthe Sumit Baban, a 2017-batch Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Indirect Taxes) officer, as Assistant Director at the Narcotics Control Bureau's South-Western Wing, headquartered in Mumbai. The appointment is part of the federal government's broader strategy of deploying revenue and customs specialists to strengthen maritime anti-narcotics enforcement. The NCB's South-Western Wing commands jurisdiction over Maharashtra, Goa, and adjoining maritime zones, overseeing anti-narcotics strategies, maritime surveillance, and airport interception operations. It is one of the bureau's most operationally demanding commands, given the volume of international cargo and sea traffic passing through the region. Kumthe brings expertise in international trade compliance, cargo profiling, customs monitoring, and financial intelligence — skill sets that are increasingly central to countering transnational drug syndicates that exploit maritime logistics and container cargo channels. His IRS background positions him to bridge customs port intelligence directly with the NCB's tactical enforcement teams. Over recent years, the NCB Mumbai wing has intensified its focus on intercepting synthetic drug consignments, monitoring darknet-linked maritime distribution channels, and tracing money laundering trails linked to global narcotics cartels. Kumthe's role as Assistant Director is expected to enhance container tracking mechanisms and deepen cooperation with international maritime security agencies. The appointment reflects the government's policy of deploying trained revenue professionals at key maritime enforcement nodes to strike at the financial underpinnings of international drug smuggling operations, alongside the parallel inductions of IRS officers at other NCB zonal units across the country.
