NITI Aayog CEO Hunt: Three IAS Officers in Race to Head India's Premier Policy Think Tank
With the position of NITI Aayog CEO drawing fresh attention ahead of anticipated changes, three Union Secretary-level IAS officers have emerged as the leading contenders for the top policy planning role in the Government of India.
The race to lead one of India's most consequential policy institutions has entered an intense phase, with three senior IAS officers at the Union Secretary level now emerging as the frontrunners to be appointed as the next Chief Executive Officer of NITI Aayog. The position of NITI Aayog CEO is among the most strategically influential in the Indian administrative system. The office functions as the executive nerve centre of the government's premier planning and policy think tank, translating the broad vision of the Governing Council — chaired by the Prime Minister — into actionable programme frameworks, data-backed policy nudges, and cross-ministerial coordination exercises. The current CEO, BVR Subrahmanyam — a 1987-batch IAS officer from the Chhattisgarh cadre and a veteran of senior roles in the Prime Minister's Office — has been at the helm since August 2023. His tenure has coincided with significant exercises including the Viksit Bharat @2047 vision document and new frameworks for competitive federalism. The impending decision on his successor has set off considerable speculation in South Block circles, with three names consistently surfacing from within well-informed bureaucratic networks. While the specific names have not been officially confirmed, all three are understood to be officers at the Secretary or equivalent level with substantial experience spanning economic governance, infrastructure, and inter-governmental coordination. The appointment of a NITI Aayog CEO typically signals the government's current thinking about its economic governance priorities, making this a closely watched decision not just within the bureaucracy but also in business and academic circles. The Prime Minister's Office, which exercises direct oversight over NITI Aayog, is expected to take a call in the coming weeks. The 11th Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog — chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi — is also scheduled shortly, and observers see that occasion as a likely backdrop against which the successor announcement may be made to underline continuity of institutional focus.
