Nivedita Shukla Verma Gets Additional Charge as Secretary for Development of North Eastern Region
Nivedita Shukla Verma, Secretary DARPG and DoPPW, given additional charge of Secretary, Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region.
Ms Nivedita Shukla Verma, a 1991-batch IAS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, has been assigned the additional charge of Secretary, Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), in addition to her existing responsibilities as Secretary of the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) and the Department of Pensions and Pensioners Welfare (DoPPW). Ms Verma is already one of the more heavily tasked senior IAS officers at the Centre, managing two departments that play a significant role in governance reform and service delivery for retired government employees. The addition of the DoNER charge places her at the head of three concurrent secretarial responsibilities. The Ministry of DoNER is responsible for coordinating and facilitating Central government programmes in the eight states of Northeast India — Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura. It works in tandem with the North Eastern Council (NEC) and manages funding allocations for regional development under various schemes. Such additional charges at the Secretary level are common in the Central government when a ministry's Secretary post falls vacant and a full-time appointment is pending. Senior officers with experience in administrative reform and governance are considered well-placed to oversee ministerial functions in the interim. Ms Verma's assignment reflects the government's confidence in her capacity to manage multiple portfolios concurrently.
