Foreign Deputation of Debjani Chakrabarti at Indian Embassy Tokyo Extended by Eight Months to April 2027
Debjani Chakrabarti, 2002-batch IAS, gets 8-month extension on deputation as Minister (Economic and Commerce) at Indian Embassy Tokyo till April 2027.
The government has extended the foreign deputation tenure of Debjani Chakrabarti, a 2002-batch IAS officer of the Odisha cadre, by eight months. She is currently serving as Minister (Economic and Commerce) at the Indian Embassy in Tokyo, Japan, and her deputation has been extended up to April 28, 2027. Chakrabarti's role at the Indian Embassy in Tokyo involves handling bilateral economic and commercial relations between India and Japan. This includes facilitating trade, investment, and business engagement between the two countries, as well as coordinating with Japanese government agencies, business chambers, and Indian industry representatives. Japan is one of India's significant economic partners, with a growing portfolio of Japanese investment in Indian manufacturing, infrastructure, and technology sectors. The Economic and Commerce wing of an Indian mission abroad plays a central part in translating diplomatic ties into on-ground business outcomes. Extensions of foreign deputation for officers in key economic positions are granted when continuity is considered important for ongoing negotiations or long-term engagement programmes. An eight-month extension suggests that Chakrabarti's work at the Tokyo mission is still in an active phase that would benefit from her continued presence. The extension was processed through the standard DoPT and Ministry of External Affairs channel. Officers on foreign deputation are deputed for fixed tenures and extensions require government approval at the appropriate level.
