Pallavi Jain Govil Assigned Additional Charge of Sports Secretary Till June 14
Pallavi Jain Govil, Secretary Youth Affairs, given additional charge of Secretary Sports till June 14, 2026, as Hari Ranjan Rao is on leave.
Ms. Pallavi Jain Govil, Secretary of the Department of Youth Affairs, has been given the additional charge of Secretary, Department of Sports, until June 14, 2026. The arrangement has been necessitated by the absence on leave of IAS officer Hari Ranjan Rao, who normally heads the sports portfolio. Govil, a 1994-batch IAS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, brings considerable administrative experience to the additional responsibility. The Department of Sports functions under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and oversees policy implementation for national sports bodies, athlete development programmes, and major sporting events in which India participates. The dual charge arrangement is a standard administrative mechanism employed when a senior officer goes on planned leave, ensuring that the department does not experience an administrative vacuum. Given the shared ministerial structure of Youth Affairs and Sports, the assignment of the additional charge to the Secretary of Youth Affairs reflects both logistical convenience and the confidence reposed in Govil's capabilities. The interim arrangement is time-bound to June 14, 2026, after which it is expected that Hari Ranjan Rao will resume charge of the Sports Department. Govil's long career in the IAS has seen her handle a range of portfolios, and her familiarity with youth-related governance makes her a natural fit for the temporary additional assignment in the sports domain.
