PGCIL Executive Director Pankaj Panda Emerges as Strong Contender for NTPC CMD
Pankaj Panda, Executive Director at PGCIL, is a strong candidate for NTPC CMD, with his power sector profile viewed favourably by the PESB.
Pankaj Panda, currently serving as Executive Director at Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL), has emerged as a prominent candidate for the position of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NTPC Limited, the country's largest power generating company. Panda's profile at PGCIL — India's central transmission utility — is said to carry considerable weight with the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB), the body responsible for recommending CMD-level appointments at central public sector enterprises (CPSEs). His operational experience in India's power transmission sector and his track record at a Navratna PSU are seen as credentials that align well with NTPC's scale and strategic ambitions. NTPC's CMD position is one of the most coveted roles in the Indian PSU landscape, given the company's dominant position in thermal and increasingly renewable power generation. The CMD steers NTPC's capacity expansion plans, manages a workforce of thousands, and represents the company before the government, regulators, and international partners. Panda's candidacy is being discussed alongside other senior figures from the power sector, and the selection process is expected to weigh not only sectoral expertise but also leadership capability, government engagement skills, and vision for NTPC's energy transition journey. The PESB will deliberate on the shortlisted candidates before forwarding its recommendation to the competent authority for final approval.
