Indian Railways has promoted and transferred TN Kakaji to Southern Railway as Principal Chief Electrical Engineer, placing him in charge of electrical operations across the entire zone. Kakaji, an officer of the Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers, previously served as Chief Electrical Services Engineer at Central Railway.

The Principal Chief Electrical Engineer position is a Chief Head of Department-level posting responsible for a zone's entire electrical infrastructure, spanning traction power systems for electrified routes, rolling stock electrical systems, signalling power supply, and station and yard electrification, a portfolio that has grown considerably in scope as Indian Railways has pushed toward near-complete electrification of its broad-gauge network in recent years.

Kakaji's move from Central Railway's Chief Electrical Services Engineer role, a position focused specifically on electrical services and maintenance functions, to the PCEE role at Southern Railway represents both a promotion in seniority and a shift to zone-wide electrical charge, encompassing traction, signalling power, and rolling stock electrical systems together rather than a narrower services-focused mandate.

Southern Railway, covering Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and parts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, has been among the zones actively expanding electrified route coverage and upgrading traction infrastructure to support higher-speed and higher-frequency train operations, work that falls directly under the PCEE's coordination responsibility alongside routine maintenance and safety compliance for the zone's existing electrical systems.

Chief Head of Department-level electrical engineering postings such as this one report to the zone's General Manager and form part of the core technical leadership overseeing a zone's operational readiness, with electrical infrastructure reliability directly affecting both punctuality performance and safety outcomes given the interdependence between traction power availability and train operations on electrified sections.

The promotion and transfer order was issued through the Railway Board's standard cadre management process governing IRSEE officer postings across the network's zones.
