West Bengal Promotes Six WBCS Officers to Junior Administrative Grade

The West Bengal government on Wednesday announced the promotion of six West Bengal Civil Services (Executive) officers to the Junior Administrative Grade (JAG) at Level 19, marking a significant career milestone for the officials recognised in the order. The officers promoted include Sharadwati Chowdhury, Sub-Divisional Officer at Bankura (Sadar) in Bankura district; Souvik Mukherjee, SDO at Tamluk in Purba Medinipur; and Kunal Banerjee, Project Officer-cum-District Welfare Officer in Purulia. Also promoted are Biswajit Bhattacharyya, an OSD at the rank of Deputy Secretary in the Personnel and Administrative Reforms Department; Pushpa Dolma Lepcha, an Officer on Compulsory Waiting in the P&AR Department; and Arun Paul, another OSD at the DS rank in the P&AR Department. In addition, Sanjay Pandit, WBCS (Exe.), currently serving as District Magistrate and District Collector of Jalpaiguri, is also among those elevated to the Junior Administrative Grade. The promotion to JAG Level 19 represents an important step in the state civil service hierarchy, typically enabling officers to take on greater supervisory and administrative responsibilities at the district and department level. The inclusion of officers from field positions — SDOs and DMs — alongside those in the secretariat reflects a broad-based recognition of performance across deployment categories. The West Bengal Civil Services (Executive) cadre forms the backbone of district administration in the state, handling revenue, welfare, law enforcement coordination and development functions. These promotions are expected to enhance the capacity of the departments and districts where these officers serve.
